Abstract: The SOLA-VOF is extended to
calculate the water flow in an open cylinder, the rotation rate of which changes in a
trapezoid wave. The water flow is true transient. The primary variables of the governing
equation are primitive ones-the pressure and velocity components. Staggered non-uniform
meshes and explicit iteration are used. The numerical result is consistent with the
experimental phenomenon. If the cylinder rotates at a constant speed until the water and
the cylinder act together as one rigid unity, the calculated free surface shape is very
close to that predicted by the theoretical formula, which proves that the treatment to the
free surface is correct.
Keywords: true transient, incompressible viscous fluid,
free surface fluid.
