Abstract: Composites with high strength-weight ratio and modulus-weight ratio are widely employed in engineering. The Fiber-Optic Smart Layer, which is attac hed onto composite laminate surface or embedded inside composite, is manafactured on the basis of modularization and integration of optical fiber self-diagnosing system. The FOSL does not affect the structural strength of the host composites via axial tensile test and flatwise tension test, which can be embedded inside composite for health monitoring. The optical strength is related linearly with the strain of layer embedded single mode crossing optical fiber stain region and calibrated before embedding. Thus, the optical fiber sensing networks and self-diagnosing modules of FOSL enable to realize the smart health monitoring of composites.
