Abstract: Based on the concept of the damage tolerance design, the stress inten sity factor, residual strength and the crack propagation period of plates with variable thickness are analyzed. According to the principle of equal weight design, the reliability and safety of the plates are discussed emphatically, the corresponding principle of damage tolerance design is proposed. The presented stress intensity factor of plates with variable thickness consists of factors of basic structural parameters, thus the influence of each structure parameter is essen tially obvious to provide a simple way to obtain the stress intensity factors forenginering practice.
Keywords: plates with variable thickness, damage tolerance design, stress intensity factor, residual strength, crack propagation speed.
