Abstract: A method to analyze torsion
performances in a spot-welded thin-walled box is proposed, where the cross-section varies
slowly along the longitud inal direction. Warping torsions for two situations, even and
uneven pitch of spot-welds, are discussed. It is concluded that torsion rigidity is
weakened as the beam length increases, whose decreasing rate is nearly equal to one of uni
form section; the beam with varying section keeps a certain rigidity with fewer welding
spots and lower cost. If the welded spot pitch p2, in the right, varies within
25% of the pitch p1 in the left, the shearing
force transmi ssion nearly unvaries. The simulation results coincide the experimental ones
very well.
