Abstract: Driving mechanism of the cylindrical
ultrasonic motor with the first bending vibration mode is investigated. The total
elliptical motion trace of a particle on the stator is derived in three-dimensional space.
To research the distinguished feature of the driving mechanism of the cylindrical
ultrasonic motor, the elliptical motion is decomposed into the effective elliptical motion
perpen dicular to the stator end surface and the radial linear motion. The effectiveel
liptical motion drives the rotor, meanwhile the radial linear motion brings out radial
slip between the stator and rotor with great energyloss. The influence on the motion
stabilization of the rotor is analyzed based on the effective ellip tical motion as the
amplitudes of two phases of vibration are unbalanced or the phase difference is arbitrary.
