Abstact: Permanent magnetic bearing and the
spiral groove hydrodynamic bearing are utilized as the support for the rotor of the
experimental flywheel energy storage system, and squeeze film dampers supply damping for
the rotor-bearing system. The analytical solution of the pressure of the squeeze film with
a closed-end and an open-end is derived from Reynolds equation and long bearing theory.
The stiffness and the damping characteristic coefficients of the squeeze film are achieved
after some simplifications are taken. The calculated unbalance response is compared with
the test response of the rotor-bearing-damper system.
Keywords: squeeze film damper, rotor, flywheel energy storage.
