Abstract: Cylindrical tube with a screwy welded seam subjected to internal pressure loading may result in a local angular distortion (such as peaking). Although the problem of peaking at the longitudinal welded joint had been studied quite extensively, a cylinder subject to peaking distortion at the screwy welded joint remains open because of its three-dimensional complex stress state. A simple model to predict the stress concentration factor for screwy welded joint is presented in this paper. The results are explicit so the procedure of prediction is convenient to use in engineering application. A systematic numerical analysis has been conducted with finite element code of ABAQUS 5.8 to validate the present model. The comparison shows good agreement.
